Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering has swept various external technology awards at the end of the year, proving technological competitiveness.
DSME won at the ‘Korea Technology Awards’ and ‘the top 10 machine technologies of the year’ awards, hosted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy, and by related organizations such as the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology Evaluation and Management, the Korea Federation of Machinery and Technology, and the Korean Society of Mechanical Engineers. DSME was selected for and received the honor of receiving many external technology awards.
Among the products developed and commercialized in Korea, a 1,400-ton submarine was independently developed by Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering for the Korea Technology Awards, which are awarded annually by selecting technologies with excellent technical performance and high impact on the domestic industry.
‘1400-Ton class export submarine’ was selected. In addition, Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering’s ‘Smart Energy Saving System’ was selected as the ‘Top 10 Machine Technologies of the Year’, which selects excellent technologies in the field of machinery developed in Korea. In addition, two products were selected as world-class products:’DSME 1,400-ton export submarine’ and ultra-large container ship’, which includes the world’s largest 24,000 TEU-class container ship.
The ‘DSME 1,400-ton export submarine’, which was selected as the Republic of Korea Technology Awards and the world-class product, and achieved two crowns, won an order for about 1.3 trillion WON from the Indonesian Ministry of Defense in 2011, achieving the first submarine export in Korea and the all-time defense industry. It has set the record for the largest single export contract ever. Since then, the submarine’s performance and technology have been recognized, and in 2019, it won three additional submarine orders and announced the excellence of the Korean defense industry to the world.
The smart energy-saving system, selected as one of the ten best mechanical technologies of the year, includes the SGM / Shaft Generator Motor and the Air Lubrication System (ALS / Air Lubrication System), and DS4, Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering’s own smart ship solution. It was developed to produce the best performance while reducing the fuel consumption of the ship in connection with the product.
When this technology is applied, it is possible to reduce fuel costs equivalent to about 1 billion WON per year compared to existing ships, respond to GHG emission regulations, and dramatically improve the overall energy efficiency of ships, resulting in increased interest and installation requests from ship owners.
The ultra-large container ship (24,000 TEU class), selected as a world-class product this time, is an eco-friendly, high-efficiency ship built by Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering. It is equipped with a scrubber, a desulfurization device, to preemptively comply with the environmental regulations of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). In 2018, HMM, the largest shipping company in Korea, ordered 7 vessels to Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering and delivered them successfully, and is a representative result of the win-win relationship between the Korean shipbuilding industry and the shipping industry.
“Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering has been officially recognized for its world-class technology and excellence in research and development through various external awards,” said Dong-gyu Choi, president of the Central Research Institute of Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering. We will continue to lead the world market in the eco-friendly ship field.”
