The newest 639-foot, US-flagged freighter of Great Lakes’ made its first-ever stop on Tuesday morning in the Duluth-Superior harbour.
Interlake Steamship Co.’s Mark W. Barker has a capacity of about 26,000 gross tons. Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding built it in Wisconsin’s Sturgeon Bay, with steel manufactured from iron ore mined on Iron Range, Minnesota.
It entered service in late July and was christened in Cleveland on Thursday, 1 September.
The ship was to unload its cargo comprising 22,000 tons of salt at EnviroTech Hallett Dock 8 based in Superior. It would then load iron ore on reaching Duluth’s Canadian National dock, per Jayson Hron, the spokesperson associated with the Duluth Seaway Port Authority.
It is the first Great Lakes vessel built by any American firm since 1983.
Even though it is the shortest ship in the Interlake fleet, the gorgeous, self-unloading bulk carrier reportedly can carry conventional bulk cargoes and wind turbines.
Mark W. Barker has been named after the president of Interlake.
