The cocaine was meticulously packed in 70 waterproof containers connected with a signaling light gadget, according to the Guardia di Finanza, with an estimated street value of €400 million (approximately $440 million).
Furthermore, it is thought that the items were left by a passing cargo ship for traffickers to acquire and bring onshore.
According to the financial police, they dispatched numerous boats from Catania and offered air cover while searching for other floating parcels.
This seizure was equivalent in size to New Zealand’s largest drug bust earlier this year, when over 3 tonnes of cocaine were discovered floating in the sea.
