U.S Coast Guard Medevacs Burnt Crew Member From A Bulker 175 Miles Off North Carolina

The U.S. Coast Guard medevaced a crew member of a bulker called PRT Ace on Wednesday. The 29-year-old crew of the Panamian-flagged bulk carrier had sustained serious burns while he was operating the ship’s incinerator.

The 60,000 DWT bulker was drifting off North Carolina’s coast after a trip from Cartagena, Colombia. On Wednesday, the bystanders with Coast Guard 5th district got a help request from the other crew members of the Ace.

The vessel was located 150 nm east of Morehead City, North Carolina. A helicopter from Elizabeth City hoisted the crew member off the ship and took him to the Norfolk Sentara Hospital for medical attention.

Video from his rescue suggests that the crew member sustained severe burns on both arms.
