A 63-year-old British man lost his life, and six were injured following a luxury yacht crash on Sunday. The 21-meter vessel was sailing near a Sardinia-based resort when it suddenly crashed into rocks.
The man was reportedly the owner of the yacht. He was not conscious but alive when the Italian coastguard of Porto Cervo and Olbia rescued him. However, first responders reported that he passed away immediately afterward.
Per initial reports, the yacht crashed into the rocks after swerving to avoid colliding with another vessel.
Coastguards and police were examining the incident that occurred on Sunday around 8.40 pm, close to Li Nibani Island, near Porto Cervo.
Seven individuals were onboard. Among those injured, two are in critical condition. The nationalities have not been disclosed yet.
The Maltese-flagged yacht was recovered and towed carefully to Porto Cervo. It was impounded by the local police and will be held for investigation in Sardinia.
The Italian coastguard is guarding the area where the crash occurred. The name of the boat hasn’t been revealed yet.
