As part of a significant effort to revamp Hurtigruten Norway’s fleet to make it more sustainable, the firm has invested about 100 million Euros for green upgrades implemented by 2024.
This move follows its sister firm, Hurtigruten Expeditions, launching the world’s first battery-hybrid powered expedition vessel in 2019, named the MS Roald Amundsen. The well-known expedition cruise brand now boasts three battery-hybrid powered ships in the fleet.
MS Richard With has undergone extensive upgrades and was retrofitted with battery packages, new engines, and next-gen propulsion systems at northwestern Norway’s Myklebust Yard. Hurtigruten Norway’s seven vessels will be equipped with SCR systems that are expected to lower NOx emissions by 80% by early 2024.
Hedda Felin, the CEO of Hurtigruten Norway, stated that their goal is to achieve zero emissions, and they aspire to plan the next-gen zero-emission vessels that have already started. Until the technology is pioneered, they are investing in giving the existing fleet a green upgrade with the most advanced technology available. Still, we plan to have the first emission-free vessel in their fleet by 2030, and they are striving hard to achieve that.
