The Coast Guard reportedly rescued a distressed mariner during a multiunit response that was about 6 miles to the west of the Columbia River mouth on 3 February. Crew members of the Station Cape Disappointment and the National Motor Lifeboat School, with aircrew of the Advanced Helicopter Rescue School (AHRS), reportedly responded to the distress call of the mariner.
This was the first life John “Branch” Walton, the Petty Officer, saved. He is a student of AHRS and a rescue swimmer.

The mariner reportedly experienced minor injuries but was stable when transferred from the Coast Guard’s care. Once the mariner had been released to the supervision of the emergency medical personnel, the local authorities informed the Coast Guard that the individual was suspected of stealing the vessel.
Astoria’s Police Department is leading the case investigation.
