Watch: Dramatic Video Of MV Stellar Banner Sinking

Stellar Banner, the very large ore carrier (VLOC), was scuttled off the Brazilian coast. The vessel was intentionally sunk three months after she ran aground with iron ore.

The Marshall Islands-registered  Stellar Banner suffered damage after departing a Vale loading terminal in Maranhão, Brazil. The vessel ran aground approximately 100km from the coast of São Luís on February 24, 2020. The vessel was carrying 306 thousand tons of iron ore and was headed for Qingdao, China.

About 145,000 tonnes of iron ore was successfully removed by salvors and the vessel was refloated to assess the ship’s structure, which was deemed a total loss and hence the decision was taken to scuttle her.

MV Stellar Banner was owned and operated by South Korea’s Polaris shipping and was chartered to Brazilian mining giant Vale to transport iron ore from Brazil to China.
