On Thursday, January 26, Chinese authorities declared eight crew members, including Chinese nationals, dead from the Jin Tian cargo vessel that went down in Japan on Tuesday.
The South Korean and the Japanese Coast Guard worked in tandem to rescue the cargo ship’s crew, but they couldn’t save everyone. They searched for the crew on aircraft and different vessels but could save only 5.
Earlier on Tuesday, a distress signal was sent from the ship 110 km west of Danjo Islands. Danjo is an uninhabited, remote island in South West Japan, bordering South Korea.
Out of the eight dead crew members, 6 are Chinese nationals, as revealed by Fukuoka city Chinese Consul General Lu Guijun, who expressed condolences to the victims’ families. So far, Japan hasn’t confirmed the numbers, only saying nine are missing from the ship.
The cause of the ship’s sinking hasn’t been disclosed yet. It was heading towards Incheon, South Korea, when the incident happened. The vessel was last seen at Port Klang in Malaysia.
