A Bangladeshi Vessel Sinks In The Hooghly River

A part of a Bangladesh-bound general cargo vessel loaded with fly ash reportedly collided with one more vessel. It submerged in the Hooghly River, an IWAI official informed on Saturday.

The incident happened at Nischintapur, which falls under the South 24 Parganas district, in the early hours of the day.

About nine members could be rescued after the police officers rushed to the scene upon getting the information.

They were taken to the police station later, and the police informed them.

A vessel representative explained that some vessels had sunk, and the water had gradually seeped into the ship’s engine room.

The ship, however, can still be salvaged, he explained.

The official associated with the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) mentioned that the movement of vessels to and from the port of Kolkata would not be impacted as the boat is not in the navigational channel.

An inspection team has been sent to be present on the site, and a detailed report is also awaited. Discussions are also progressing to repatriate these rescued sailors.
