Alphaliner Report: 2022 Saw Boxship Sales Reducing To Half Of 2021

On January 11, Alphaliner released its global container-shipping sales and purchases report for 2022, highlighting the plight of the container-shipping industry as freight levels returned to normalcy after the pandemic. The industry’s purchases and sales have halved.

The purchases and sales for 2022 stand at 950300 TEU, with boxship sales going down by 49% compared to 2021. The capacity crunch was even more, with a drop of 53% from 2.04 million TEU in 2021. Globally. companies sold 295 box ships last year.

In terms of purchases, Alphaliner was ahead of CMA CGM, which bagged 102500 TEUs from 31 ship purchases, while Alphaliner made 420,000 TEUs from 92 ship purchases. The liner accounted for 44% of purchases from the 950300 TEU up for sale in 2022.

MSC was the most active buyer and operator of 2022, as per the Alphaliner report. The report further noted the absence of big tonnage providers from the market in 2022, as SFL Corp’s 2500 TEU eco feeder purchase from Goto Shipping was the only buying activity noted.

MSC bought 8800 TEU Northern Jasper and sold Northern Jupiter to Maersk at $85 million and $133 million, respectively.

Alphaliner underlined that the surge in vessel prices was due to the orderbook overcapacity, which is unlikely to ease out soon. Non-operating owners and regional carriers are expected to benefit from the situation because of the prohibitive tonnage cost.

The report highlighted that large buyers like MSC would remain active in certain acquisition areas.
