On Tuesday, January 24, around 1 pm local time, a bulk carrier took on water near Queensland. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) was alerted immediately, and two tugboats anchored the ship.
The ship had no coal and 24 people on board when it took in water.
The bulk carrier Frontier Unity is a Panama-flagged ship with seven meters of water in the engine room. It was on the way to Hay Point, Mackay, when the incident happened.
A statement by the AMSA revealed that the ship’s engine room was taking in water after some commercial divers repaired the ship.
The AMSA is only providing additional support to Marine Safety Queensland (MSQ) because the ship is within port limits and should be tackled according to the National Plan for Maritime Environmental Emergencies.
AMSA assured that all the concerned parties are working in tandem to deal with it and reduce the environmental and safety risk. So far, no fatalities or injuries have been reported.
The ship is in anchor with tugboats, and water ingress has stopped.
