Captain of MV Wakashio, the ship which ran aground and spilt oil at the Riviere des Creoles, Mauritius, has been denied bail.
The Panamanian-flagged Japanese ship belonging to Nagasaki Shipping Co. ran aground on a reef, carrying nearly 4,000 tonnes of fuel and caused Mauritius’ biggest environmental disaster.
Mauritius court rejected the application for bail made by Sunil Kumar Nandeshwar, the captain of the MV Wakashio that sunk off its southeastern coast when it was en route to Brazil from China.
According to court documents, Nandeshwar is provisionally charged with “unlawful interference with the operation of a property of a ship likely to endanger its safe navigation.”
