A cargo vessel flying the flag of Guinea-Bissau with 14 crew members sank off the Mediterranean coast in Turkey on Wednesday, taking the lives of at least three.
Five individuals were reportedly rescued while efforts continued to find the other missing crew members, officials and news report sources mentioned.
The Joe 2 reportedly sank off the coast of Kumluca, in the Antalya province, while going toward Ukraine from the port of Iskenderun, per Gov. Ersin Yazici.
It was transporting aluminium, per the state-operated Anadolu Agency. The reason behind the sinking of the ship was not clear. An examination has been started by the office of the chief prosecutor for Kumluca.
The Coast Guard Command of Turkey said it got a distress call at approximately 3:47 am and dispatched a vessel, multiple boats, and two helicopters.
It declared that two crew members were successfully rescued by helicopters of the coast guard while three others were rescued by other ships in the area.
All crew members were nationals of Syria. The rescue efforts had been hampered owing to a storm, Anadolu informed.
