Divers Discover Buried Treasure In The Bahamas From A Vessel That Sank About 366 Years Ago

A treasure buried centuries ago has been finally recovered after it spent years underwater. The explorers discovered several artefacts from the ship Nuestra Señora de las Maravillas meaning “Our Lady of Wonders.”

The almost 900-ton Spanish vessel sunk after it collided with a boat from the same fleet and then crashed straight into a coral reef close to the Bahamas in 1656.

The ship was loaded with cargo, and millions of items were recovered over several years, from the 1650s to the 1990s.

But in the most recent find, dive teams found coins, gemstones, and jewels that earlier belonged to the knights who fared the seas.

The items will be displayed at the new Bahamas Maritime Museum later this month.

The Maravillas was sailing for their home to Spain. It was carrying treasures from the Americas, plus some that were salvaged from another wrecked ship from Spain, when it collided with the flagship of its fleet owing to a navigational error. Only 45 of 650 individuals survived.
