Djibouti-Flagged Tanker MT Young Yong Runs Aground Near Takong Kecil Island

The Transportation Ministry’s Sea and Coast Guard (KPLP) has reportedly commenced an operation for evacuating a Djibouti-flagged tanker named MT Young Yong, which allegedly ran aground close to Takong Kecil Island on Friday.

At present, operations are being tackled by relevant institutions, Coast Guard, Tanjung Uban Class II Sea, Tanjung Balai Karimun, the Harbor Master (Class I), as well as the Port Authority, and the ship owner, for evacuation purposes, KPLP’s director Mugen Sartoto reported officially in a statement released on Saturday.

Per Sartoto, the Coast Guard and Tanjung Uban Class II Sea reportedly dispatched a boat dubbed KNP Rantos P-210. In contrast, the Tanjung Balai Karimun Class I Harbor Master and Port Authority posted KNP 366.

The Djibouti-flagged tanker reportedly ran aground at 8 pm local time on 27 October; he mentioned adding no casualties or environmental damages were reported in the incident.

Responding to the reports of the incident, the KPLP reportedly dispatched eight officers on two patrol boats to survey the seabed conditions where the MT Young Yong had run aground and track and secure the vessel the same day, he mentioned.

The evacuation operation needs to be conducted carefully as the tanker is within the Singaporean gas pipeline area.

No sea contamination or casualties were a result of the incident. The director mentioned that they are striving to evacuate right away to prevent excessive impact, the director said.

He further added MT Young Yong left Malaysia’s Tanjung Pelepas Port on 18 October, and its destination was Nipa Island in the Riau Islands.

The Djibouti-flagged tanker, manned by 25 crew members, was transporting about 284,429 tons of oil, he mentioned, adding that the 332-meter tanker is owned by a Hong Kong-based firm named the East Wind Ship Management Ltd.
