Gujarat’s Mundra Port Nearing Full Capacity In Terms Of Container Handling

Mundra Port in Gujarat processed 6.64 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) in the Fiscal Year 23 and is constructing a new facility to accommodate the container traffic arriving and departing from India’s North-Western region.

APSEZ, India’s most noteworthy infrastructure port operator, controls four container terminals with a total ability of 7.5 million TEUs; Mundra handled 6.52 million TEUs the year prior.

Docks on India’s western coast can process about 17.4 million TEUs, with Mundra and Jawaharlal Nehru ports taking up 90%, around the optimal rate for ports/docks to function properly without obstacles such as congestion or ineffective production.

CMA CGM Agencies (India), a branch of CMA CGM S A, which is considered to be the world’s third-largest container volume company, manages one of Mundra’s four container terminals with APSEZ as an associate.

The second terminal at Mundra port was initiated by APSEZ last year, expecting to add an additional 1.2 million TEUs. However, no estimated time of completion has been announced yet. It has been said that the project is expected to be finished independently based on sources.

Containers are presently the fastest growing cargo segment for Mundra port, contributing 6.64 million TEUs (or close to 100 mt) out of 155.54 million tons (mt) of cargo managed during FY23; dry and liquid cargoes accounting for the remaining portion.

APSEZ has eight years left on their 30-year concession for developing and managing the port from the Gujarat government; however, they have already started investing in another container terminal which probably indicates that they are after an extension from the state government as well.
