India’s longest cruise service extending from Varanasi in UP and Assam‘s Bogibeel will start in 2023, Sarbananda Sonowal, India’s Union Minister, mentioned Monday.
It covers over 4,000 kilometres via the Ganga, Indo Bangladesh Protocol Route, and the Brahmaputra.
This will allow the citizens of Assam to use waterways and promote trade, tourism, and transportation of cargo, Sarbananda Sonowal added.
He also mentioned that the Indian government is identifying other avenues to boost inland navigation, constructing terminals across the Brahmaputra, and river cruise tourism.
On Monday, Sarbananda Sonowal launched several projects to develop the Bogibeel near Assam’s Dibrugarh. In this context, the minister has laid the foundation to construct two jetties at Guijan and Bogibeel.
He further officially inaugurated the Bogibeel Riverfront Passenger Jetty.
The floating jetties at Dibrugarh’s Bogibeel and Tinsukia’s Guijan will be constructed as terminals using top-notch technology. India’s Inland Waterways Authority is in charge of making these jetties over the National Waterways -2 (NW-2), also known as the river Brahmaputra.
The work was reportedly awarded to the Coastal Consolidated Structures on a contractual basis for engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC). The jetties are built at about Rs 8.25 crore and are set to be executed by February 2023.
