An Iranian naval flotilla prevented an overnight attack on a vessel from Iran in the Red Sea, a senior commander informed on Wednesday.
The escort flotilla of the Iranian armed forces’ naval arm, led by the destroyer Jamaran deployed to last night’s scene on receiving a request for aid from an Iranian vessel sailing in the Red Sea, and engaged with the attacking boats, informed Rear Admiral Mustafa Tajeddini, the deputy head of operations at the navy.
Thanks to the naval presence and following heavy exchanges, the attacking boats made off, he informed on the state television.
Tajeddini did not provide the details of the targeted vessel or who was suspected of mounting the attack.
In November last year, the pirates attempted to confiscate an oil tanker from Iran in the Gulf of Aden, the ISNA news agency mentioned.
About two weeks back, an Iranian warship prevented a pirate attack on two oil tankers trying to escort into the Gulf of Aden.
Like other countries that are dependent on the shipping lane via the Suez Canal and the Red Sea, Iran upped the naval presence in the Gulf of Aden following a host of attacks by pirates from Somalia from 2000 to 2011.
But the number of attacks has sharply fallen in recent years.
