The vessel, otherwise popular as Koru, measures 127 meters in length, the largest sailing yacht in the world and the largest one constructed in the Netherlands, per reports of Boat International.

The vessel’s sea trials have been ongoing since February, earmarking the ultimate phases of its construction. The construction of the yacht, which earlier went by the code name of Y721, took nearly five years.

In 2022, at one point, Oceano, the Dutch custom yacht builder who was responsible for Koru, caught itself mired in several controversies when it placed a request for dismantling a historic bridge in Rotterdam to permit three tall masts to pass underneath the bridge.

Locals vehemently protested against this dismantling, compelling Oceano to reportedly tow the boat under cover of night to yet another shipyard without the masts. The masts had to be installed later on.

The yacht is the tallest worldwide. It boasts a height of about 230 feet and needs a crew of about 40 sailors to operate it. Besides its whopping $500 million price tag, it needs a yearly operating cost of about $25 million.

Why it is important: Bezos stepped down as Amazon’s CEO but continues to be the e-commerce retailer’s executive chair. He is also the third-richest man in the world. His net worth is approximately $125.1 billion, per Forbes.

The Amazon founder is known to be the partying kind — in 2022, he and Lauren Sanchez, his girlfriend, welcomed the New Year on a $42,000/week superyacht in the Caribbean.
