MMEA’s Deputy Director of Operations for Labuan, revealed that their patrol vessel KM Bistari had been conducting operations and performing routine checks on Malaysian registered vessels at the time.

Officers saw that none of the requisite ship insurance paperwork, port clearance documents, or crew member documents were displayed during the inspection. Malaysians, Filipinos, and Myanmar nationals made up the crew; nevertheless, neither the captain nor his crew nor their chief engineer had legal competency or qualification credentials.

Under the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952, all individuals and vessels were transported to the Labuan Maritime Jetty for inquiry.
