Negotiations were held, between ship owners and seafarers’ unions from all over the world, on the minimum wage being given to the seafarers. The negotiations had been initiated by the UN International Labor Organization and further coordinated by the International Chamber of Shipping and the International Transport Workers’ Federation.
The agreement is applicable universally to the rating grade of Able Seafarer and is recognized widely by the global shipping community as contributing to decent work and employment for seafarers, to support them and their families.
During the initial round of discussions that ended in September 2021, seafarers and ship-owners set the minimum wage at $648 as of 1 July 2022.
Over the last round of negotiations, social partners agreed to structure the new three-year agreement via annual increases, as mentioned below:
Commenting on the result of prolonged negotiations, Charles Darr of the Swiss Shipowners’ Association, also the spokesperson for the ship-owners group, mentioned that the new deal is a win-win for ship-owners and seafarers.
