Seven passengers reportedly had perished when a fire suddenly broke out on Monday aboard a vessel that had set sail for Real in Quezon, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) reported.
The fatalities observed on Vessel Mercraft 2, include two males and five females, the PCG Commodore named Armand Balilo mentioned in his statement.
The PCG reported 103 rescued (uninjured) individuals, 24 rescued (injured) individuals, and seven passengers who died due to the incident.
Vessel Mercraft 2 had departed from Polillo Island around 5 a.m. and reportedly caught fire nearly 1,000 yards away from the Port of Real.
Rescue missions are in progress. It is undertaken by the PCG authorities – Real, the local government’s unit, and some of the crew members of vessels nearby.
Joel Villanueva, the Police Colonel and the police chief of Quezon, said that crew members of two roll-on-and roll-off as well as other vessels immediately reached the site and rescued 124 guests. Merchant Shipping which owns MV Mercraft 2, had to state the incident as of 9 am.
In December 2017, yet another vessel that was owned by the firm, MV Mercraft 3, having 251 passengers, capsized between the waters of Quezon, Dinahican Point, and Polillo Island, which resulted in five deaths.
