A 28,000-ton cruise vessel reportedly sailed into Tokyo Bay on Thursday to mark a new milestone in Japan’s post-COVID-19 pandemic reopening. It happened to be the first-ever foreign liner to dock at a two-year-old terminal.
The Tokyo International Cruise Terminal was launched in the late 2020s when stringent Covid-19-prevention measures were in place. Vessels that sailed from foreign ports were not permitted to dock in Japan.
MS Amadea reportedly made a port call on Wednesday at the Shizuoka Prefecture. It was the first-ever foreign cruise vessel to be in Japan since the nation’s government eased its COVID-19 measures.
The Tokyo terminal boasts the ability to accept the largest cruise vessels in the world.
Tokyo officials have said that a single port call by a large liner would be bringing about 200 million yen in terms of economic benefits.
