For the first time, Uzbekistan has sent a train to Europe, loaded with copper via a new channel bypassing Russia, Uzbekistan Railways mentioned on Monday, as part of the Central Asian nation’s strategy to maintain trade ties with the EU.
The train is expected to deliver about 91 units of containers (measuring 20 feet each) and loaded with a dense copper concentrate received from Almalyk Mining and Metallurgical Combine throughout 4,000 km to Bulgaria, it mentioned in its statement.
The route, popular as the Middle Corridor, crosses Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, and Georgia and the waters of the Caspian and the Black Sea with the help of train ferries.
Brussels has boosted the Middle Corridor as a viable alternative to the conventional Northern channel for the Europe-Asia railway shipments that cross Russia.
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) mentioned last month that it was prepared to invest billions of euros toward developing cargo channels between Asia and Europe that bypass Russia.
