Video: Cargo Ship Crashes Into Bangladeshi Ferry; Many Passengers Feared Dead & Missing

More than five individuals are already dead and dozens more are missing after an inland cargo carrier collided with a small ferry near Bangladesh’s capital. The accident happened on Sunday.

Police informed that almost two dozen humans managed to swim ashore after the carrier dubbed MV Ruposhi-9 ran over the ferry named MV Afsaruddin.

Footages of the sinking produced by local media show how people are screaming in alarm as the bulk carrier collides with the small ferry. They are seen to be jumping into the contaminated waterway as the boat sinks.

Shah Jaman, the chief of local police informed that they could recover the bodies of five individuals, including a man, three women, and a child.

The ferry was expectedly carrying over 60 passengers. Of them, 22 managed to swim ashore safely, Aslam Mia, a police inspector said. Monjurul Hafiz, a district administrator, reported that the divers and coast guard personnel were assisting in the rescue operation.

A crowd gathered on both the banks of river Shitalakshya to watch the rescue operation for the survivors. A passenger named Rakib Al Raju was traveling to Madaripur from Narayanganj on another launch during the incident. He witnessed the collision and reported that

Having arrived around 2:10 pm near the new bridge in Narayanganj, he saw the carrier moving over the launch. However, it did not slow down. He added that the pilot of the vessel may not have seen it.

Ferry accidents are not uncommon in Bangladesh. The experts blame poor lax safety standards and maintenance, as well as overcrowding. A ferry sank in Dhaka in June 2021, following a collision with another vessel, taking the lives of at least 32 individuals.
