Video: Marine Dept Puts An Expert Team To Look Into Container Ship–Tanker Collision

The Marine Department — JLM — has reportedly put together a team to investigate yesterday’s collision involving the MV GSL Grania container and a tanker MT Zephyr I in Batu Pahat.

JLM reported that it’d continue monitoring the current state of the vessel registered with Liberia and the tanker registered with Panama to ensure the situation is within control.

In a statement, JLM mentioned that both the vessels were asked to anchor in a safe location to facilitate damage verification and other investigations.

JLM had taken necessary steps to facilitate navigational telex (NAVTEX) for warning other vessels in nearby routes about the situation to empower them to take precautionary measures.

A primary investigation discovered that the MT Zephyr I that was sailing toward Yantai in China had lost its control owing to a significant failure in the steering system, making it swerve left and hit MV GSL Grania’s starboard quarter. The latter was on the way toward the Port of Tanjung Pelepas based in Gelang Patah.

Per the JLM, owing to the collision, the starboard quarter of MV GSL Grania was reportedly impaired, and the MT Zephyr also sustained damages to the ship’s bow.

However, the good news is that there weren’t any oil spills.

The statement added that they urge everyone not to spread unverified news that results in unnecessary confusion among the public.
