The world’s biggest ocean-going wooden sailing vessel reportedly sailed into Grand Harbour, Malta in the past weekend before sailing on to Barcelona in Spain on Tuesday.
Sweden’s Gotheborg will be moored at the port in Spain for the winter before proceeding with its voyage to Shanghai in east China. The vessel is reportedly on a two-year Asia Expedition that aims at promoting Swedish-Asian trade and creating new and better business opportunities.
It is a brilliant replica of a Swedish East India Company vessel that belonged to the 18th century and reportedly sank outside Gothenburg in Sweden in 1745.
The expedition aims at empowering individuals to join the 20 crew of sailors as deckhands, experience sailing an 18th-century vessel, and welcome visitors during the stopovers along the route.
The Gotheborg departed from Sweden on 8 June and has since been docked at Helsingborg, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Helsinki, London, Nice, Lisbon, Oslo, Malaga, and Monaco. Barcelona will be the last stop in the year’s expedition.
In 2023 (March), the Gotheborg will set sail for Asia. It’s scheduled to reach Shanghai in 2023 (September).
